IPv6 & Linux

The following examples are based on Redhat 7.3. Generally Redhat 7.3 and 7.2 are the same for IPv6 configuration. For other Unix/linux flavours you should consult Peter Bieringer's web page listed below in the references (this is a usefult thing to do anyway !).

Redhat 7.3 as an IPv6 host

Here is an example of a Redhat Linux 7.3 box enabled to run IPv6 on a LAN. It assumes an appropriately configured IPv6 router already exists on the local LAN with router advertisments, RAdvD, etc.

Edit /etc/sysconfig/network, add the lines:

NETWORKING_IPV6=yes

Edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, add the lines:

IPV6INIT=yes

Reboot or run "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart" - instant IPv6 enabled host!

This makes use of the default settings, which enable auto-configuration and auto-router discovery.

Redhat 7.3 as an IPv6 LAN Router

Here is an example of a Redhat Linux 7.3 box being used as a router for a LAN. It allows a local LAN to have IPv6 support (auto-configuration and auto-router discovery for other IPv6 hosts) with an external link (IPv6 in IPv4 tunnel) to the IPv6 backbone. It uses a static default IPv6 route, and assumes the remote end is set up with an appropriate tunnel interface and route table and connectivity to the IPv6 backbone.

Edit /etc/sysconfig/network, add the lines:

NETWORKING_IPV6=yesIPV6FORWARDING=yesIPV6AUTOCONF=no#IPV6_DEFAULTDEV=sit1

Edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, add the lines:

IPV6INIT=yes

IPV6ADDR=2001:0388:1000:3000::0002/64

Create /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-sit1 containing:

DEVICE=sit1 

BOOTPROTO=none

ONBOOT=yes

IPV6INIT=yes

IPV6TUNNELIPV4=192.231.212.5

IPV6ADDR=2001:0388:0000:0001::0002/64

Create /etc/sysconfig/static-routes-ipv6 containing:

sit1	2000::/3sit1	3ffe::/16

Reboot or run "/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart" - instant IPv6 router! Note that the "IPV6_DEFAULTDEV" dos not seem to work at this time, so I have used the older "static-routes-ipv6" option.

Edit /etc/radvd.conf, set the contents to:

interface eth0           {           AdvSendAdvert on;           #           prefix 2001:0388:0C00:3002::/64                   {                   AdvOnLink on;                   AdvAutonomous on;                   };           };

Then restart radvd with "/etc/init.d/radvd restart" (and make sure that radvd will start after reboot with "/sbin/chkconfig radvd on").

Redhat 7.3 as an IPv6 Core Router

Here is an example of a Redhat Linux 7.3 box being used as a router for multiple networks. It is basically the same as the above example, but adds the complexity of BGP4+ peering for dynamic routing, plus adding 6to4 routing. It assumes the remote end of the tunnel is set up with an appropriate tunnel interface and runs BGP4+ with peering statements for this host and connectivity to the IPv6 backbone.

Edit /etc/sysconfig/network, add the lines:

NETWORKING_IPV6=yesIPV6FORWARDING=yesIPV6AUTOCONF=noIPV6_DEFAULTDEV=sit1

Edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, add the lines:

IPV6INIT=yesIPV6ADDR=2001:0388:1000:3000::0002/64IPV6TO4INIT=yesIPV6TO4_RELAY=192.231.212.5

Edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-sit1, add a line:

DEVICE=sit1 

BOOTPROTO=none

ONBOOT=yes

IPV6INIT=yes

IPV6TUNNELIPV4=192.231.212.5

IPV6ADDR=2001:0388:0000:0001::0002/64

Reboot or run /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart - instant IPv6 router!
